Who is Responsible for Success on the Court?

by Shawn Jones on Jul 29, 2024

A debate I love to have with coaches is, “Do players win or do coaches win?” Who is ultimately responsible for the success? Anyone with coaching experience and wisdom should say BOTH. You can’t win without kids. Winning coaches have talented players. There is no arguing that fact. Show me a championship team made up of low-skilled players but a genius coach. It doesn’t happen. The old saying goes, “It isn’t about X’s and O’s, but more about Jimmy’s and Joes.”

Here they come, all those bar stool coaches who will point out some NBA or NFL team that was “under-talented” and won because of the genius calling the plays.  Sure, there have been some “under-talented” teams (by professional standards), but they still were composed of professional athletes—the top .05% of mankind— suited up. They aren’t exactly struggling for athleticism or skill.

I have seen very talented teams under-achieve due to poor coaching. That CAN happen; but never have I seen a poorly-skilled team overcome a great team through great coaching.  At least not on any type of regular basis. Coaches need kids.

So, how do coaches get skilled kids?  Repetition, repetition, repetition. If a coach is a quality coach he or she is regularly drilling fundamental skills. But how does one coach help 30+ athletes at one time? How can you have 30+ athletes doing the same needed drill without sharing space at the same time or you staying at the school until midnight?

Ballogy is a platform where coaches can assign, evaluate, and offer immediate feedback to skill work done by their players simultaneously from any and all locations.  Simply choose from the detailed lists of skill-specific drills in our library, or assign your own favorite drill your kids know. Select the timeframe, the number of reps.  Do you want them to video themselves completing it? Do you want to score it or just mark it as complete? The options are endless for you to customize your assigned workouts. Our app collects and ranks the workout results into leaderboards to show which athletes are excelling and leading your team.
